Do Not Call List Identity Theft Scam
Yet another Identity Theft Scam on the Rise
It’s no secret that telemarketers aren’t typically your favorite people. After all, they tend to make their phone calls at the most inopportune times and you can never get them off the phone without being rude. Thankfully the government came up with the do not call list to help people avoid having to deal with these irritating calls. Unfortunately, there are some people who are using it to create yet another identity theft scam.
The Scam
Believe it or not, this identity theft scam starts with a phone call of all things. The person calling says they’re from the government and that they’re working on the do not call list. They call saying they’re confirming that you want to be placed on the do not call list. Then they start asking you for personal information such as your birth date and social security number.
The problem is, these people aren’t working for the government and they have nothing to do with the do not call list. These people are involved in identity theft and want your personal information so they can use it for their own means. If someone calls saying that they’re from the government and calling about the do not call list, hang up the phone and don’t give them any information.
