Can Internet Security Software Prevent Identity Theft?

Preventing Identity Theft with Internet Security Software

If you're serious about preventing identity theft, then you really need to take a look at your Internet security software. After all, today's Internet security tools go a lot further than the basic anti-virus protection of yesteryear. Nowadays your Internet security software can stop viruses and spyware, thwart hacker attempts, set parental controls and even notify you of phishing scams. What does your Internet security software do? Is it doing enough?

Things to Look For

If you want your Internet security software to protect you from identity theft, there are certain things you need to look for. Not all software is created equal and some Internet security products have features that others do not.

Today's top Internet security software offerings will provide you with spyware and virus protection, spam control, parental controls, advanced firewall options and even network monitoring features for your wireless network. There are other bells and whistles available, but you should make sure you have these features, at least.

If your Internet security software doesn't do all of the above, it's time to start looking for something else. With so many Internet security products to choose from, there's no reason to do without critical features such as these.

The Price Factor

You really can't put a price on protection from identity theft, but that doesn't mean you should be taken for a ride when purchasing your Internet security software. Remember, however, that you get what you pay for.

In my personal experience, I find it's best to take the middle road approach to cost. Free or dirt cheap products won't offer you the protection you need (and may even put you at risk) and you probably don't need the level of protection required by the Department of Defense.

That being said, you should be able to get adequate Internet security software for $50 or less. It's a small price to pay for Internet security, identity theft protection and peace of mind.
