A Common Identity Theft Scam

This Identity Theft Scam Happens Every Day

It’s an identity theft scam that happens quite often and you need to know about it in order to effectively protect yourself from it. You receive a phone call and the person on the other line states that they’re from your credit card company. They’ve noticed an unusual spending pattern and they want to confirm that you are the person who made the charges. The call seems innocent enough, but believe it or not, it’s a common identity theft scam.

Not All Calls Are Scams

First things first, you need to understand that certain credit card companies will call you if they notice unusual spending patterns and they will call to confirm that you made the purchases. They will, however, never ask you for personal information.

If a person calls you saying they are from your credit card company and they want to verify purchases that you made, that’s one thing. But if they start asking for things like your credit card number or the three digit code on the back of your credit card, or even your social security number or just the last four digits of it, tell them that you will call your credit card company directly and hang up the phone.
